Without Prejudice
64 minutes - screened SBS TV 2001

Widely used in schools, universities and workshops, Without Prejudice is a frank exposé of indigenous and non-indigenous sentiment on reconciliation in Australia.

Without Prejudice was based on a large Deliberative Poll held at Old Parliament House, Canberra, in February 2001. Four hundred people from around Australia were brought together to deliberate on two key questions: should the Australian government say sorry for its past treatment of indigenous people, in particular to the Stolen Generation, and should indigenous Australia have a treaty.
Resentment and misunderstanding on both sides ran deep at the start of the weekend's deliberation but a reassuring shift in attitudes becomes evident as the film progresses. The program reveals how opinions can change when people are given sufficient knowledge to reach informed conclusions.
A non-profit, non-partisan think-tank, Issues Deliberation Australia (IDA), convened and organised the Deliberative Poll. IDA also commissioned the documentary. It was part-funded by the Silverton Foundation and what was then Normandy Mining, now Newmont Australia.
